BRIEF
Design a functional Sydney train timetable inspired by an art movement. I chose Bauhaus, drawn to its striking balance of simplicity and complexity — bold typography, primary colours, clean geometry, and asymmetrical layouts that remain rooted in function.
CONCEPT & APPROACH
I was particularly inspired by the Bauhaus principle of organised chaos — the ability to transform complexity into clarity through strong visual systems. This concept guided my process as I looked at Sydney itself — its architectural landmarks, roads, and the constant movement of people — as a living example of chaos waiting to be structured.
Through geometric linework, bold contrasts, and structured layering, I translated the rhythm of the city into a timetable that is both functional and aesthetic. Each element was chosen not just to inform, but to create visual harmony — mirroring the Bauhaus ethos that design should be beautiful, intentional, and accessible.
OUTCOME
The final piece reimagines the train timetable as more than a grid of data; it becomes an engaging art object that reflects the pulse of Sydney. By distilling the city’s complexity into a simple, ordered design, the work celebrates the Bauhaus philosophy of merging art, craft, and everyday life.
